Episode 7 Rehash: "Victimless Crimes" Plotline #1: Jimmy is court-appointed to represent a young woman named Darlene who shot her rapist an hour afterward. She refuses to cooperate with Jimmy, insisting that she knew what she knew what she was doing and that she wasn't sorry. The partners discuss what tack to take. Jimmy says she refuses to go temporary insanity. Rebecca suggests rape trauma, which sounds like temporary insanity to me, and suggests the psychiatrist she used in her last trial. Jimmy tries to talk Darlene into at least meeting with the doctor. She does, but the doctor comes out after a half-hour and says she didn't tell her enough to allow her to conclude rape trauma, but Jimmy convinces her to testify anyway. She does, saying it's possible Darlene was suffering from rape trauma. The district attorney gets her to say that she met with Darlene only once, that morning. Jimmy takes Darlene back and tells her she's going on the stand, but she'll have to act sorry. She gets up and testifies about the rape and how she killed him, but she wasn't sympathetic. On cross, she told the judge that Jimmy told her to cry and say she was sorry when she wasn't. The only thing she's sorry for is that the rapist didn't suffer enough when she shot him. Not surprisingly, she's found guilty of second degree murder. Jimmy goes to see her, telling her that he'll try some appeal possibilities, but they're long shots. After he leaves, she finally breaks down. Plotline #2: Lucy goes to the doctor with a mark on her breast. The doctor tells her that it's a human bite mark that's become infected. Lucy didn't remember being bitten, so she asks her boyfriend, who insists he didn't do it. Lucy goes to Ellenor and asks how well she knows Dr. Nettle, a dentist she had recently visited and people at the firm recommended. She had gotten her wisdom teeth out and figured that he is the only one who could have bit her. Ellenor says he's Bobby's cousin and that's all she knew about him. She and Lucy go visit Helen, who tells them that there's not enough evidence to issue an arrest warrant, but she can subpoena his patient files to see if he bit anyone else. Alan (Dr. Nettle) comes to Bobby after receiving the subpoena, saying he doesn't know why. Ellenor and Lucy come back and Lucy confronts him, telling Bobby about the bite mark and that Alan is the one who did it. He doesn't deny it. Alan admits it to Bobby in his office. He insists he's getting help, but also admits that he regularly fondles his female patients but says he kisses "very few." Now he's afraid of a criminal record. Bobby comes out from his office, still wavering about whether or not he's going to represent Alan, and Lucy and the rest of the office are pissed off at him. He keeps saying that it's his cousin, and he needs help. Bobby indignantly agrees that he wouldn't represent him if it went to trial, but he will during settlement negotiations. Eugene and Ellenor represent Lucy. They work out a deal for $85,000, plus a signed confession that Eugene will keep to insure that Alan keeps another person in the room with his patients at all times and will no longer do anything requiring anesthesia. Bobby encourages Alan to take the deal. Meanwhile, Lucy gives her two weeks, angry that Bobby stuck by his cousin. She refuses the deal and goes back to Helen, asking her to prosecute. Bobby brings him into court and they agree to have Alan plead guilty if he gets straight probation and mandatory counseling. Bobby asks Lucy why she turned down the money in exchange for a guilty finding. She says that she needed to reclaim some power over her situation, and that was the only way to do it. Bobby apologizes and asks her to stay on at the firm, and she does, cheekily asking to be made partner. Next week: Eugene's ex-wife is in the shower and comes out to find a man (I suppose her lover) murdered in their bed. Also, Lindsay's representing a mental patient who killed five people 20 years ago. Jimmy looks at the file and says he's... the Hummer? the Harmer? Dunno. Anyway, it's some famous serial killer who's petitioning to be released from the institution.
